PLANNING : THE STORY BOARD

STORYBOARD

Story boarding is a very useful way to plan and set out your initial ideas of your project before setting out and begin filming. It becomes a vital part of the process, as you plan and set out the shot types in each scene. This gives you a full picture of lighting, camera shots and sounds when splitting up, as it provides detail throughout each scene. This allows you to go into filming knowing what you want to achieve rather then just making random decisions, which could worsen and make your piece unclear and too confusing.

My group and I worked on our story board which holds the plot and the different camera angles and shots that we are going to use when filming our production. From using this storyboard it helped us structure, form and pre-visualise our motion picture. The storyboard also helped us identify errors at an early stage, these can include incorrect shot types for certain scenes. This helps to reduce disruption during the production phase. Our aim is to engage and hold the audience throughout the whole opening involving visual variety as well as textural. Editing and camera movements can also benefit the narrative to make the structure more clear.

PLANNING: TOPLINE AND BIG QUESTION

We watched a presentation by Frank Ash he is a Creative Consultant for the BBC Academy who has taught storytelling and creativity techniques to teams across the BBC and beyond.

From this video we learn that it is important to focus on the audience. Frank Ash believes it is important to get across quickly the main topic of the film and the major concern is thinking about the audience. He also thinks, the top line needs to emotionally engaging to the audiences, to catch and draw their attention in from the beginning. This is done by needing to think what the story is about? What is the outline of it? and What is the issue or the content?

A good story teller should be able to synthesise the story into one top line, this is usually short, sharp and straight to the point. This helped us to sum up are own narrative in one sentence. Then Frank Ash added in order to hook the audience the writer needs to develop the big question as to what is going to happen next? In our group we were developing the hook, what will keep the audience gripped to watching more.

Top line
The past events of an abusive father has led to this young girl suffering from attacks from Dissociated Identity Disorder. This leads her to have two completely different personalities, one who is normal and the other who is an angry, destructive version of her.

Big Question
Will she be able to suppress these changes forever?

RESEARCH : HOT SEATING SCRIPT

Before carrying out our Hot seating for our protagonist we did research to gain further knowledge about how to carry out a successful hot seating. 'Hot seating' is an effective exercise in which an actor is asked specific questions as their character's background, behaviour and motivation. We gained research from an article that inspired us which was written by Charlie Sierra about building a back story of our film characters which was quote from  a book written by Pen Densham, an Academy Award nominated filmmaker. Within the book, there was a section which describes questions that actors should be asked by the directors to gain greater understanding of the characters.
To prepare will write a script for our Hot Seating which allows the visual to be more fluid and prepared. A script however may make the interview more formal and fixed which breaks the image of an natural interview. However, I would prefer a Hot Seating to be realistic and legitimate of the characters characteristics rather than staged.

RESEARCH : MARKETING DISTRIBUTION

I watched a video by Kenzia Williams and she was describing the congested marketplace, the main feature for a distributor is to grasp their target audience. Chris Besseling provided me with information about the films USP which involves the casting and its provenance as well as its reviews and awards. Matt Smith from the FDA also informed us that spend on the digital has increased drastically. For example, trailers are now edited for portrait viewing on smartphones and for all the social media platforms. This works as a synergy whole in promoting a product. Matt Smith also refers to paid-for marketing as distinct from free publicity. Social media can generate viral marketing, this is very useful to the distributors because it is all for free.

I deiced to chose 'Yesterday' as it is a new release which have current ideas with many marketing techniques that will be useful to know when naming my own production.

Marketing of Yesterday

Online and Social

Yesterday has made its own website personalised for the film. It includes a easy spread out homepage that have special effects with animations and a the tagline, however, the rest of the page is pretty repetitive with the useful content. They also have their socials linked on for example, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. They also have short clips giving a preview of the film, as well providing lots of information as where you can purchase the film. They also have descriptions of the synopsis, cast and general information.

Media and Publicity

There has been a variety of publicity for example, interviews and talk shows. For example, Boyle has been interviewed about the making of the film and about how he conceived the story later.
He has made may appearances on well known talk shows, this is hugely useful as it spreads the word about the new upcoming film. He also made an presence on 'Kimmel' in which he performed Yesterday as well as a talk about the film. The late late show was also a talk that he went on which is did similar aspects.
Boyle has been very open and honest with the press. He has talked about how he has been apart of franchise films after walking after Bond 25; as he felt uncomfortable as he would be telling a story from a female lead.

RESEARCH: SCOOP.IT

I have created a Scoop.it account to collate further research increasing my knowledge of the context about split personality disorder. I have saved few articles and other relating films and genres to give ideas for our opening sequence to grab the audience attention making them hooked into wanting to know more.

RESEARCH : MEDIA COMIC THEORY

I have researched into media theorists who include: Vladimir Propp, Levi-Strauss, Roland Barthes and Todorov. And I made a comic strip in order to present what i had found out. Whilst researching into these different media theorists I was able to think about how each of these theories apply to my own film opening sequence.

The software i used for this comic strip is called Comic Life, this was a very useful software and i really enjoyed the process of making this particular comic strip.

RESEARCH: FILMING & EDITING IN FINAL CUT

RESEARCH : ON THE SET

In our lesson we have learnt on how to use equipment appropriately getting the best quality and use out of them.

We use equipment like a Canon Cameron and Manfrotto Tripods.

Cameras and tripods.
In groups we passed the camera around and each of us practised how to handle the camera, insert the battery and memory card. When you pass the cameras around you should say 'yours' and 'mine' to avoid the risk of dropping it. We learned how to set up a tripod and to 'bubble' it using the spirit level to help make the camera balanced and in focus. We explored the camera such as how to focus. The exposure on the camera is adjusted by moving the dial up and down.

What is White Balance?
It is the process of removing unrealistic colour casts, so that objects which appear white in person are rendered white in the photo. Proper camera white balance has to take into account the "colour temperature" of a light source, which refers to the relative warmth or coolness of white light. You adjust it by selecting the ‘WB’ on the camera, it will then come up with little pictures representing difference colour tones that are used in different lights which will give a more realistic effect.

What is the 180-degree rule?
The 180-degree rule is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another. When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle.

On set
We then learnt the terminology used in the film industry on set. The director shouts 'Standby' before filming to ensure that everyone is ready and when they are, they reply 'Standing by.'

I also have learnt the basics of filming like when the director shouts ‘rolling’,everyone on set must be quiet, then he / she shouts ‘action’ which tell the actors to start. After the shoot, the director has said the last ‘cut’, he / she will say ‘strike the kit’ which is the film crew's cue to pack away, put the batteries on charge and ensure that the footage is uploaded.

Practice in editing.
We are using Final Cut Pro and iMovie on the iMacs in the media studio. When uploading our footage, we should create a folder to keep the shots. These folders are called bins and the unedited footage from cameras are called rushes.
