Claremont Fan Court School 64680

I worked with Charles Clements 1615 and Thea Lawton 1641.

Our brief was to make the titles and openings of a fictional film. The title of our film is called 'Fractures'. Fractures is a psychological thriller which explores a young girl who has a Dissociative-Identity Disorder. Throughout our short film, her distraught family life becomes a huge part of her mental illness. When creating the piece we incorporated many visual and sound codes in the duration of short film.

Camera WorkFor most of the shots I was in front of the camera instead of filming most scenes. However, the shots that I wasn’t in such as the ones involving Elsa I got behind the camera as much as I could to use my knowledge of different camera angles and shots.

Editing - I took part in the editing when choosing which clips to initially use and to merge them together making the opening easy to interpret. I also helped Charlie choose the soundtrack and sound effects making this sound link with the storyline.

Directing - Within directing, I had the initial idea of the film opening. This has aspired from my love of thriller and horror films. In the film, directing was my main role however we all discussed the reality of mental illness. I directed as well as acted in most of the scenes. For example, I directed the flow of the opening making each shot develop into another. I mainly directed the beginning of the opening, with the reflective shot showing a reaction shot.

CONSTRUCTION : FEEDBACK

This collage above shows the contrast between the development of our before (left) and after (right) of our title credits. We initially removed the animated text by getting rid of the fading effect across the screen. We decided this was a beneficial adaptation because it was seen to be a distraction from the content of the film opening. Through feedback we decided to delete this effect to make the text more sophisticated and classy which reflects the appearance of our film opening. We adapted the text by making it a non-animated visual as well as making the text half white and half red. We decided this is a simplistic yet effective characteristic of our film opening by adding in the colour red makes the text grasp the audiences engagement

CONSTRUCTION : OUR FILMS USP

We hugely wanted our Film Opening to have a USP. We wanted a USP because we have gathered information from our research which explains how important and effective a USP is.

My Unique Selling Point point is using the disorder of a split personality.  When deciding the actor to play the role of the character ,we chose a teenage girl who looks the average, ordinary type. We thought this would be hugely engaging as the main theme to split personality disorder are male middle age characters. By twisting the character to be so contrasting it will make this film opening to stand out.

As the Elsa is presented to look like any girl next door, this may relate to the target audience making them feel a link towards the character. It shows the divide between this innocent young girl and the struggles towards the relationship between her and her father with the mother being clueless.

RESEARCH / PLANNING: DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER

I wanted to carry out research and planning of the Dissociative identity disorder to gain an greater understanding of this disorder because it plays an important part throughout our film opening. More research will let me plan the protagonists behaviour and characteristics which makes the characters profile to be more in-depth and realistic towards the disorder. This will make the audiences gain interest within the story-line as the characteristics will be as accurate as can be.

For my research I have used the NHS website which allows a range of information about DID such as symptoms and the different types of DID.

Symptoms
Dissociation is a way the mind copes with too much stress and people who dissociate may feel disconnected from themselves and the world around them. The periods of dissociation can last for a relatively short time (hours or days) or for much longer (weeks or months).
It can sometimes last for years, but usually if a person has other dissociative disorders Many people with a dissociative disorder have had a traumatic event during childhood. This can linked to our film opening due to the protagonist experiencing traumatic events of emotional abuse from her father.

  • movement
  • sensation
  • seizures
  • periods of memory loss
  • They may also feel uncertain about who they are and have many different identities
Different types of DID

There are several different types of dissociative disorder.
The 3 main types are:
  • Dissociative disorders of movement or sensation
  • Dissociative amnesia
  • Dissociative identity disorder
Dissociative disorders of movement or sensation
This disorder include seizures, paralysis and loss of sensation. There does not appear to be a physical cause, but it seems to be the result of a communication problem within the brain.

Dissocaitive Amnesia
This disorder involves inability to recall important personal information that would not typically be lost with ordinary forgetting. It is usually caused by trauma or stress. Diagnosis is based on history after ruling out other causes of amnesia.

Dissociative Identity disorder
DID is a mental disorder characterized by the maintenance of at least two distinct and relatively enduring personality states. This is accompanied by memory gaps beyond what would be explained by ordinary forgetfulness.

PLANNING : OUR NAME OF OUR SHORT FILM

The name of our film opening sequence is Fractures.
We came to the conclusion that is title was appropriate as it is memorable, effective and dynamic

Our Opening film sequence is about one young teenage girl who suffers from a Dissociative Identity Disorder. We've expressed this disorder by two actors playing one character to show the clear divide within one girls personality. I believe the word 'fractures' hugely foreshadowing the characters situation giving insight into the whole story opening. I wanted fractures to summarise our film.

We chose this font and colour scheme to draw the attention of the audience as it is memorable style due to its unique font. This can be effective branding strategy to make the audiences link the title to the short film.
The colour scheme of black and white makes a large impact to make a statement allowing the audiences to be drawn in. I like the simplistic yet striking visual to contrast each other making the image powerful and eye-catching for the audiences.

PLANNING: CONSTRUCTING OUR PRODUCTION IDENT

Making the Ident

production logo is a logo used by movie producers and television production companies to brand what they produce and to establish the production company's identity.
Our production company name and logo was designed with the type of film we wanted to make in mind. Fractures is a psychological thriller with the target audience of 15 -35 male and female. We wanted our production company name and logo to suggest that Fractures delves deep into the psyche of a teenager who is struggling with everyday family dynamics. We designed the logo with a  blinking eye because the eye is often called the window to the soul and our film takes its audience deep into the mind of a very troubled girl. We cast the eye because of its arresting beauty, which we felt would attract our target audience and link to our theme, that of the troubled girl.

Our production company created our ident. We did this by getting a shot of Thea's eye blinking on my phone, which is a One Plus 6 which allows us to have a high quality extreme close up. Then we slowed the shot down to 50%, this allowed us to add the name of our ident, which is Insight Studios creating a mysterious introduction to our final piece.

We edited our ident in Final Cut Pro. When choosing the font we wanted it to be clear, bold and creative which is reflected in the font Gurmukhi MM in size 120.00. Furtherly, splitting up the words INSIGHT and STUDIOS into separate titles. This allowed us to make them fade in and out at different points, one after another.

Adding music to the ident

We searched BenSounds for copyright free music to use with out production company ident. Our brand is one that show signal to the target audience the psychological thriller. The track Rooftop is an instrumental track with a delicate yet lingering mysterious vibe which fitted our ident because of its mysterious connotations.

Our Final Piece:
